NON-MEDICAL VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

TREK

The trek usually goes to the Annapurna region, however if volunteers are interested in taking other treks, we are able to arrange customized treks based on their interests. The cost, however may vary as our package cost is based on Annapurna trekking.

Annapurna

Western Nepal is dominated by the Annapurna Himalaya Range and the city of Pokhara. There are three major trekking routes in western Nepal: to Jomsom, to Annapurna Sanctuary, and a circuit of the Annapurna Himal itself. Pokhara is also a good starting place for short treks of one to four days. Mustang is also geographically a part of the Annapurna region, but treks to Mustang are subject to special restrictions. About two-thirds of the trekkers in Nepal visit the Annapurna region. The area is easily accessible and trekking here offer good scenery of both high mountains and lowland villages.

Although the trek is physically strenuous, there have been trekkers in their 70’s who have done the same route.  So far, every volunteer opting to trek has completed the trek.  The physicality of the trek is actually a very satisfying aspect of it: you are earning the right to see those vistas and stay in those towns.  Elevation increase is substantial but gradual, culminating in crossing the Annapurna Base Camp at 16,000 feet.  Upon request, the group will have a Gamow Bag to treat altitude sickness, a luxury which few trekking groups can provide.

The group goes from low elevation Hindu and tribal country to very high elevation Tibetan regions, then back down along the world’s deepest gorge, the Kali Gandaki, an old trading route to Tibet.  The Annapurna Circuit is a classic trek because it combines a fascinating diversity of cultures and ecosystems while traveling amidst some of the most breathtaking mountains in the world.

The trek is all-inclusive with the exception of tips, drinks (beer/soda) and snacks.  Transportation to and from, food, permits, etc., are all offered and are first-rate.  Most volunteers carry a day pack with them during the day and have a porter carry most of their clothing and gear on the trail.  All guides speak English and trekking as a group, westerners and Nepalis, is a big part of what makes it so enjoyable.  Tips (which are divided among guides, cooks, and porters) should range between $40-$50+.  To budget anything less than $20 is unrealistic and unfair to the hard-working staff.
