SISTER SCHOOL PROJECT

Surya Boarding School

Surya Boarding School was established in the year 1986. The deteriorating condition of education in villages of Nepal gave Mr. Narayan Shrestha an inspiration to establish a school for the children of his village. As a result, Surya Boarding School was established and named after his father. The main goal of this school is to provide education in general and also concentrate on issues of sanitation, reforestation, discipline, etc. Some students walk over an hour and a half (each way) to school every day. Students attend school 6 days a week enjoying Saturday off to attend the town’s very popular market/bazaar.  The venture, which started with 2 rooms, now has 100 acres of land of its own and also has five buildings with science labs and also a library – though this library need lots more assistance.

School Scholarship Program

"Investing in the future of children of Surya Boarding School in Khandbari, Nepal."

A scholarship program has been established with the Superior Elementary School community in order to support literacy for nursery/kindergarten through grade 10 students in the village and surrounding areas of Khandbari, Nepal. The primary objective of this program is to provide a quality education to the poorest children of the Sankhuwa-Sabha region of Nepal who would be deprived of getting educational opportunities because of financial difficulties. These children will eventually be able to give back to their community with an education they may not be able to receive without scholarship assistance.

"Financially Challenged Children are the central focus of this scholarship program."

The Scholarship Committee

The Scholarship committee is comprised of several individuals from the Superior Elementary School community and Principal of Surya Boarding, Mr. Padam Tamang. It is working closely with Helping Hands Education Project. to coordinate these efforts. At the present time those involved include Dr. Holly Hultgren, Lafayette Elementary principal, Bobbi Amos, parent representative on a journey to Nepal, Mr. Narayan Shrestha, founder and President of Helping Hands Health Education.

The administration of the Surya Boarding School will conduct personal interviews of all applicants as well as visits to the applicant’s homes when possible. The administration will choose the most needy and highly capable applicants.
